No longer are women just forging ahead with empowered characters on screen, but there is an entire section of women directors who are making this possible by making a sweet mélange of real and reel. These are women who deal with compelling narratives with such composure and aesthetic that you are forced to sit and take notice.

Here are 6 female directors who absolutely demand and deserve your attention.

1. Deepa Mehta
Deepa Mehta is perhaps one of the most well-known female directors from India. She has been a trailblazer in bringing her skillful prowess to speak volumes about a lot of social issues. Even though a most of her movies are now notoriously known due to the controversies they garnered -her works such as Fire and Water hit the spotlight on homosexuality and widow remarriage and were deservingly critical successes!

2. Zoya Akhtar
Finding a perfect mix of edgy with some typical Bollywood fun, Zoya Akhtar has found a perfect niche with movies that are full of all the showbiz masala but also feature fierce and independent character arcs. From her debut Luck By Chance to the super-fun Dil Dhadakne Do -Zoya Akhtar has proved her mantle more than once, tackling topics that are closed door conversations, taboo, and challenging!

3. Mira Nair
For most people, Monsoon Wedding still stands apart and aside as one of the very best movies made on the upper middle class wedding culture of India. Mira Nair is an institution in herself rather than just a director. After all it's a different level of distinguished that makes Mira Nair direct a stunning spectacle like Monsoon Wedding, and a heart-wrenching nostalgic saga like The Namesake.

4. Gauri Shinde
With just two movies old, Gauri Shinde has already reserved a sweet spot for herself in the ever-growing list of women directors. Both her movies English Vinglish and Dear Zindagi evoked great response from the audience even though they dealt with subjects that were vulnerable and relatively hushed. From the narration of a wife-mother who just wishes for some gratitude to a young girl dealing with existential and psychological issues, both movies were significant to women and were laureled just as well!

5. Leena Yadav
Her debut movie Shabd perfectly told the story of a woman caught between passion and duty, and her second movie starred two global stalwarts of acting - Ben Kingsley and Amitabh Bachchan, but it was her third movie Parched that really put her on the map as a master director. The movie which is entirely based on four female characters who grapple with sexual dilemmas was a definite force to reckon with!

6. Reema Kagti
Reema Kagti's Talaash was such a nail-biter that up until the absolute end we were just all under the umbrella of crazy suspense. Kagti's first movie Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd was just as captivating. Just like her storylines, her approach to direction is creative and subtly alternative.
