Meet Harsh and the Organization - NGO Smile

Smile is a NGO that rehabilitates street and slum kids. In a world that is practical and even cynical, Harsh believed that the odds could be in his favor. So he participated in the Asian Paints app on Facebook in a bid to win a transformation for a special space. Harsh and his mother Smita work very closely with Anaxi Shah, president of SMILE NGO.

Smile is a NGO which looks after the overall development of street children since the last 15 years. Ever since the inception of this institution, its founder Anaxi Shah has faced every challenge with a smile on her face and is motivated to give the best to ‘her’ children. Anaxi started off by educating these kids in a mere garden and went on to find this beautiful abode for her passion when a patron offered her a 300-400 sq foot cottage to use for her work with street kids. She was thrown into a tizzy when the number of attending kids grew from 15 to a 100 in the last year. Her main motive is to give these children the best of education along with an overall personality development so that they emerge as strong individuals and feel one with the world. SMILE ensures their kids are exposed to a number of extracurricular activities like dancing, painting, etc for which they conduct special workshops as well. She now desperately needs a space that is a multipurpose area: a playroom, a classroom, a movie room, a dance hall, all rolled into one. There has been a huge increase in the number of children who have associated themselves with SMILE and hence keeping their needs in mind, Smile NGO demands a makeover for their only multipurpose area and team A Whole New World happily accepted to be a part of this special change.
About the architect
Shabnam Gupta - The Orange Lane
Shabnam Gupta - The Orange Lane
The brain behind the Interior Design firm- The Orange Lane, Shabnam’s spaces are infused with a wonderful, endearing idiosyncratic quality. For Shabnam Gupta, all spaces - large and small - are grist to her mill. She naturally followed with retail in the form of ‘Peacock Life,’ a lifestyle home store. This interior designer-furniture-and-lifestyle store-owner is very practical when it comes to space management as well.

Interior designing for her, is a personal style statement. She has been voted as one of the leading ladies of 2004 by LA India and has also been shortlisted amongst the 10 young innovators in design and architecture by CW in 2009. She has also been labeled as ‘a designer to watch out for’ by Forbes India in 2010, won the IIID Award in the residential multi dwelling in 2011 and was listed amongst the IGEN top 50 designers of India by Architects and Interiors, India. Through her work, Shabnam has also managed to carve a niche in the international market as well.
About the School

Before the makeover, the space looked like a dumping ground. With flayed wall color, tainted flooring, raw storage spaces and broken exteriors, the space lacked warmth and was extremely distracting for kids to do anything in there. The roof had completely worn out resulting in the space being a furnace in the summer season. To make matters worse, as the monsoons hit the city, the water leakage would make its way too. To make this organization smile and stand out amidst the crowd, architect Shabnam Gupta first decided to close the unnecessary windows and lower the essential ones. She got rid of the mundane flooring and chose to create a pattern by placing tiles in arbitrary designs. The multiple colors on the exteriors give a new lease to the space thus making it shine like a rainbow. The space has been managed well and the basic necessities of the kids are completely taken care of in an artistic manner.
